The Lord Lucan candidate
I was inspired to write a short blog today by a candidate getting in touch after a lengthy spell of no contact; so lengthy in fact that we had begun to think he'd either been swallowed by a sink hole or abducted by aliens.
We're lucky enough to be in a professional sector of the market (Marketing, Digital, Creative & Analytics). We love our candidates and clients because Marketing is cool, people care and are generally very professional about the way they go about their job search.
There are a small number of exceptions.
I can't go in to too much detail about this particular candidate and their lack of professionalism in case I give away their identity, but they had 'struck out' after a number of disappearing acts that made me visualise Lord Lucan riding Shergar through the Lost City of Atlantis when they got in contact today.
It was one of those rare and sad occasions when we have to say that we can't help someone in their search for their next career move, because candidates who we can't rely on to be courteous enough to let us know they are not showing up to a job we have found for them or an interview make us look nearly as unprofessional as them to our clients.
We work hard every day to offer the best possible service we can and build our excellent reputation in the market. We can't afford to waste our time on time wasters.
My faith in humanity was restored shortly afterwards by another candidate who called me to say he wanted to decline an interview. “Sorry for wasting your time he said, I've had a chat with my partner, it's not a product that excites me, I promise to be more decisive next time. Please pass on my apologies to the client.”
And these are the type of people the Forward Role team love to work hard to find great jobs for!
And my advice for any candidates reading this is simple; don't be afraid to say "No" to us or any other recruitment consultant. We will sell you our client's role, tell you why we think it might be a good option for you, but we'll never hold it against you if it's not for you. So don't be afraid to tell us that. It's great if you pick up the phone to tell us why or a nice note on email is always welcome. Just don't do a Harry Houdini, because the Marketing community is a small one; clients talk and your professional reputation is at stake.
