How do you stand out in the creative industry?

Manchester is one of the Creative capitals of the North, which is fantastic if you’re looking for new career opportunities in this space. But in such a vibrant and competitive landscape, how do you stand out?

Here are some of my hints and tips. I’m part of our Creative Team and I look after Design, UX, UI and Development roles from Graduate to senior levels across the North West:

1. Have a balanced portfolio

This may seem like an obvious one, but you wouldn’t believe me if I told you how many people I speak to that don’t have a portfolio! It’s the most important thing when looking for a new role. Dare I say it, it’s even more important than the good old CV in some instances. Your portfolio is proof that you can do what you’re saying. You don’t get the opportunity to show off your skillset like this in many industries, so take full advantage of it.

2. Be creative, but not too creative

You want to show off your skills, without going too far. It’s possible to be ‘too creative’. Your CV and portfolio should be easy to read and should give the potential employer the right information. As good as CV’s look with spiralling text, they’re not that easy to read. Think about the reader, they’re not going to want to roll over to be able to properly read your CV. Well, that’s a bit dramatic, but you get my point. You can still show off your creative flair whilst maintaining simplicity. Always remember: less is more!

3. Think outside the box

This may sound contradictory following on from the previous point, however you have to make yourself stand out. First impressions count and you want to let a potential employer know how good you are. Think about how you can stand out from the crowd, but keep it subtle. Come up with a theme and stick to it.

4. Keep it relevant

I know it can be time consuming, but tailoring your CV and portfolio to each job is essential. I’m sure you’re aware there are many different elements of design, therefore sending a print portfolio to a digital role isn’t going to have a massive impact. Have a couple of portfolios that are tailored to each of your skills and highlight that individual area.

5. Social Media is your friend

Social Media is becoming a huge part in recruitment. Most of us are on it all day, every day and potential employers will always check out your online presence. Think of your Social Media profiles as an extension of your portfolio. There are areas on each platform where you can create banners, take advantage of this and show off your skills!

Now that you’ve made yourself stand out in the crowd, what do you do next?
