October is Cyber Security Awareness Month! To celebrate we are putting the spotlight on leaders in CyberSec, to find out what it’s really like working in the industry and the advice they would give to anyone who wants to pursue a cyber career.
Incursion are a Cyber Security Consultancy, offering cyber assurance and penetration testing services. It was founded by Gareth and Lewis - two cyber industry experts and British Army veterans with a shared vision for end-to-end cyber consultancy services.
Gareth Paterson:
1. Why did you decide to pursue a career in Cyber Security?
It is one of the fastest and most dynamic industries in the world. I needed a career change and loved the technical challenges.
2. What do you enjoy most about working in the industry?
No two days are the same. You don’t know what to expect and when you pop a box or application that is supposed to be secure, It’s an awesome feeling!
3.What advice would you give to anyone wanting to break into the industry?
Study hard and evidence your learning, with write-ups of labs. Learn how to formulate reports and try to relate what you have found to a business context.
Lewis Lockwood:
1. Why did you decide to pursue a career in Cyber Security?
Cyber Security and more specifically, penetration testing, seemed to be a natural next step following my career as a Military Intelligence Analyst and my interest in all thing's technology related.
2. What do you enjoy most about working in the industry?
Working on a project with a genuinely engaged client who sees real value in the work I do rather than seeing it as a regulatory tick in the box.
3.What advice would you give to anyone wanting to break into the industry?
Cyber Security is a broad subject, and while there are very exciting days, the grind is a real thing. So, talk to people across the entire industry and find the area that excites you the most. Then it’s just a case of learning as much as you can, practicing new skills and evidencing what you can do to present to an employer.
