Internal Communications Manager

Role Profile (The purpose of the role)

To lead and drive the colleague communication agenda for the group companies, supporting the engagement and retention of all colleagues, driving improvements to our colleague experience and creating an attractive employer brand.

Scope of role (The functions, people and revenue responsibility)

Direct Reports: None.

Reports to: PR & Content Manager.

Responsibilities of the role (What we want you to do)

  • To create and support the delivery of an integrated colleague communications plan aligned to the group companies.
  • To deliver colleague communications activities to support key projects e.g. the strategy cascade, the digital transformation programme, the review of customer services processes, and the brand review.
  • To deliver key existing colleague communications activities
  • To consider all available internal communications channels – such as email, the intranet, an app, SMS, Facebook for Business, social media and vlogs – to ensure continual optimisation of interactive two-way colleague communications.
  • To build/ maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders and the leadership team.
  • To work with the wider marketing department to make sure communications reach colleagues in a timely and consistent manner and to exploit opportunities to share external messages.
  • To ensure the core values/ tone of voice sit at the heart of all colleague communications.
  • To develop, own and drive the colleague communications calendar, ensuring necessary planning and sign off milestones are managed.
  • To work closely with the wider HR team and support the delivery of our people strategy.
  • To seek ways to measure the effectiveness of our channels for colleague communications to help shape further activity and to continuously improve.

Success Measures (What success in the role looks like)

  • Creation and delivery of an annual colleague communications plan.
  • Delivery of key colleague communications projects and activities.
  • Increase in engagement rates across internal communications activities.
  • Review, implement and optimise the internal communications channels used.
  • Effective relationships are built with key stakeholders within the group.

Experience (What you need to have already done to be right for this role)

  • Previous experience in successfully managing employee communications in a medium to large organisation (essential).
  • Creating company-wide communications strategies to share knowledge, deliver key messages and drive engagement (essential).
  • Previous experience delivering employee communications successfully across a range of channels and media to match the demographics of the colleague base (essential).
  • Evidence of improved employee engagement outcomes and behavioural change following employee communications activity.
  • Experience of working with and influencing senior stakeholders.

  • A straightforward and engaging communication style.
  • An ability to match content and channels with target audiences.
  • Confidence to build valuable stakeholder relationships. 
  • Ability to take ownership and initiative to deliver continuous improvement.
  • Passion for improving our colleague experience.
  • Accuracy in written communication.

Qualifications and other requirements

  • Degree in communications (or a related discipline) and/ or strong experience managing colleague communications (essential).
  • Experience of working within an organisation of a similar size and/ or in a similar sector (desirable).
  • IT literate, with knowledge of the effective use of Microsoft Office (essential) and experience of using specific communications channels and tools (desirable).
