Ecommerce Recruitment Solutions

Forward Role recruits the people who run online retail: ecommerce and trading managers, performance marketers, marketplace specialists, CRM, data and technology teams, and the Heads of and Directors who lead them. We've made almost 750 placements into around 150 ecommerce businesses since 2020, and seven in ten have been in digital, data or tech roles.

Not every ecommerce business hires the same way, though. Our numbers show a clear difference between companies born online and retailers selling across stores, partners and the web.

Pure-play and direct-to-consumer brands

Online-first businesses make up a third of our ecommerce work, and they lean towards more senior hires. One in seven of those placements has been at 'Head of' level or above, three times the rate for multichannel retailers, from Heads of Ecommerce, Performance and Amazon to Marketing Directors and a CEO. They also hire more data and technology talent: more than a quarter of our pure-play placements, and around one in five since 2024 has been a technology hire.

Multichannel retailers and brands

Retailers and brands selling through stores, wholesale partners and marketplaces as well as their own websites account for the other two thirds. Here the need is depth and flexibility: online trading, paid media and marketplace teams built out at pace, with a quarter of roles filled on a contract or interim basis. These are long relationships, too, with almost eight in ten placements coming from retailers who have hired with us in three or more separate years.

What both have in common

Whichever model you run, the specialisms overlap. We've placed around 75 paid media and PPC specialists, 40 marketplace and Amazon experts and 40 CRM specialists into ecommerce businesses since 2020, and more than nine in ten of our ecommerce placements are with clients who have hired through us before.
