It’s safe to say that the last few of weeks have been tough. Getting to grips with new technology, implementing new ways of working and overcoming new challenges, there’s been a lot of change. But one thing that’s stayed the same, and in fact is needed now more than ever, is our ability to stay motivated and in turn keep our teams motivated.
During the coronavirus outbreak I’ve been so impressed with how the Forward Role team has managed to do this and it’s been fantastic to have so many people, share so many different, creative ways to keep morale high and stay productive.
So, if you’re in need of some inspiration here’s a number of the different ways you can keep yourself and your team motivated during this challenging time.
Keep in regular contact
Helping everyone to stay connected is definitely the best way to keep a team motivated. Communication and collaboration are the two biggest challenges of working remotely so ensure that no-one feels isolated by keeping the team spirit alive. WhatsApp groups, voice notes and Slack channels are all great but there really is no substitute for seeing other people's faces so try to use video calls as much as you can. We’re using Zoom for all of our usual team meetings which is free for 40 minutes, or you can pay £11.99 for Zoom Pro which gives unlimited group calls for up to 100 people.
As well as keeping up with all of your regular team meetings, introduce some new ones. Virtual breakfast and lunch clubs where you all chat about which Netflix series you’re watching or what you’re doing to keep busy at the weekend, is a great way for colleagues to catch up and still feel like part of a team – for us the tradition of 4pm team drinks on a Friday is still a highlight of the week.
Whether your industry has taken a hit because of the coronavirus outbreak, or you’re busier than you can ever remember, everyone is finding the current climate challenging and so it’s more important than ever to shout about successes in your team. Make sure you’re vocal about any goals or milestones that have been hit, celebrating those who have played a part. At Forward Role we have a horn that gets honked in the office every time someone is successfully placed in a new job. Not wanting to lose this ritual, we’ve been celebrating instead by posting a recording of an air horn in our WhatsApp group and sharing our favourite GIFs.
If you’re not a business with traditional targets, why not ask people to set their own each week on a Monday that you can review as a team on a Friday. These could be work related or, particularly for those in your team who might be on furlough, could be personal; such as completing a course, taking up a new hobby or fitness goals. Having everyone in your team feel like they’ve achieved something each week will go a long way towards staying motivated.
With many people feeling anxious and uneasy about all that’s going on, it’s important that you try to continue to have fun as a team. Every day at 4pm, Steve runs a short quiz for the whole business which has been brilliant. So far we’ve had great fun with the following;
- Guess the song lyric
- Guess the album cover
- Guess the film from these famous actor/actresses
- Guess the country (from their flag)
- Guess the celebrity (picture round)
- Guess the film from these famous movie quotes
- Guess the height of these famous world leaders (a talent I never knew I had!)
- Geography question rounds
- Food and drink question rounds
- General knowledge question rounds
- Through The Keyhole – this is my personal favourite which involved everyone secretly sending in photos of their working from home set up and we all had to guess who’s belonged to who.
Quizzes and competitions like these are so easy to do and there are lots more ideas online. We’ve also had a few themed team meetings which have been fun, where we’ve asked everyone to fancy dress for our next Zoom video call or dress in particular colours.
However you choose to motivate yourself and your team it’s important to remember that this situation, however long it goes on for, is only temporary and we’re all in it together.
