The tech industry has long been known for its rapid pace of change and innovation. As companies race to develop the next big thing, the nature of work in the tech sector has also evolved. One notable shift in recent years is the rising trend of professionals opting for contract work over traditional full-time employment.

At Forward Role, our Contract/Interim team has been our fastest growing team over the last few years, to meet the increasing demand from businesses to employ Contractors and to support those looking to secure their next Contract quickly. We recently conducted a LinkedIn poll, asking our followers if they would consider contracting, 69% of people voted Yes and 10% were already working as a contractor.

The Shift Towards Contract Work

A decade ago, most tech professionals sought the stability of full-time positions. These roles provided job security, benefits, and a clear career trajectory. Today, a significant number of tech workers are exploring contracting opportunities...and for good reasons!

Flexibility is one of the most attractive aspects of contract work. Many tech contractors appreciate the ability to choose projects that align with their interests and skills, set their own schedules, and even work remotely from different parts of the world. This flexibility can lead to better work-life balance, allowing contractors to take time off between projects or pursue personal passions.

Diverse experiences are another draw. Contractors often have the chance to work with multiple companies and teams, gaining exposure to various technologies and methodologies. This variety can accelerate professional growth, expand their tech skill set, and keep work interesting.

Higher earning potential also plays a role. While contracting does not come with the benefits package of a full-time job, many professionals find that the pay rate for specialised contract roles can more than compensate for this. With the right expertise, contractors can command higher hourly rates that, over the course of a year, would work out much higher than the average annual salary for a role.

The Employer’s Perspective

The shift isn’t only fueled by workers; employers also see advantages in hiring contractors. Tech companies often face fluctuating demands and project-based workloads, which make flexible staffing solutions more appealing. By hiring contractors, companies can quickly scale their workforce up or down without the long-term commitment of permanent hires to meet specfiic project or short-term needs.

Contractors can also bring specialised skills to a company for projects. Whether it’s a machine learning expert, cybersecurity specialist, or mobile app developer, contracting allows businesses to tap into niche expertise on a short-term basis.

Considerations for Aspiring Tech Contractors

While contracting comes with many perks, there are some considerations to keep in mind. Contract roles typically lack benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, or retirement contributions. This means that aspiring contractors must plan carefully for their own financial stability, including setting aside funds for taxes and potential downtime between projects.

Networking and maintaining a strong personal brand are also essential for continued success as a contractor. In the competitive tech world, having a robust portfolio and a good reputation can open doors to desirable opportunities.

The Future of Tech Work

As more people seek flexibility and autonomy in their careers, the trend toward contracting in the tech industry is going to continue to grow. The modern work landscape has already adapted to remote work and more fluid employment structures, making contract work a natural progression. Whether for seasoned tech candidates or new professionals entering the industry, contracting represents a compelling option that aligns with the evolving priorities of the workforce.

Contracting in technology is often a win-win situation: greater adaptability for businesses and a more customised career path for professionals. With thoughtful planning and strategic career moves, contracting can be a rewarding avenue that matches the dynamic spirit of the tech industry.
