DevSecOps Engineer (National Security R&D)
Location: UK wide with key hubs across Gloucestershire, Surrey and the South Coast
Hybrid: Highside working required (typically 3 days per week)
Salary: £55,000 - £95,000 (dependant on experience and SFIA level)
Clearance: Must meet criteria for the highest levels of UK security vetting
The Opportunity
You will be joining one of the UK’s most respected engineering organisations operating at the forefront of National Security technology.
For more than six decades they have been solving complex technical challenges across cyber, data, communications and high-assurance systems for government and defence.
What sets this organisation apart is the blend of engineering depth and applied research. Teams combine software engineers, data scientists, security specialists and systems engineers to solve problems that require experimentation as much as delivery.
Engineers regularly rotate between projects to broaden their exposure and work across multiple technology domains, creating an environment that feels closer to a national security R&D lab than a traditional consultancy.
Alongside the technical work, the culture is widely regarded as one of the strongest in the sector, with active engineering communities, advocacy groups and a genuine focus on creating an inclusive environment where people can do their best work.
With continued investment and growing demand across secure programmes, the engineering teams continue to expand across their UK sites.
The Role
As a DevSecOps Engineer you will help design and evolve the platforms, tooling and automation that underpin complex engineering programmes spanning software, AI/ML and embedded technologies.
Rather than supporting a single product or stack, you will work across a varied engineering estate that includes cloud platforms, microservices architectures, edge systems and hardware-accelerated environments.
Typical responsibilities include:
• Designing and evolving CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitLab to support secure software delivery
• Automating infrastructure and platform provisioning using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or AWS CDK
• Deploying and managing containerised workloads using Docker and Kubernetes across secure environments
• Supporting cloud platform development using AWS services and modern microservice architectures
• Implementing observability and reliability practices using monitoring tools such as Prometheus and Grafana
• Applying configuration management and automation using tools such as Ansible or Puppet
• Developing automation and operational tooling using scripting languages such as Python
• Enabling software, data and hardware engineering teams to onboard their systems onto shared DevOps platforms and improving tooling across the full engineering lifecycle
Many projects also incorporate specialist environments including GPU compute, virtualised platforms and edge systems.
This role is particularly suited to engineers who enjoy working across a broad technology landscape rather than specialising in a single tool or narrow platform.
The team values engineers who are curious, adaptable and comfortable collaborating across disciplines. Strong communicators who can engage with both technical teams and stakeholders tend to thrive in this environment.
Security Requirements
Due to the nature of the work, candidates must meet the criteria required to obtain the highest level of UK security clearance. This typically requires sole UK nationality and long-term UK residency.
