Technology is one of the fastest-growing and most exciting fields in the world. From artificial intelligence to cybersecurity, there are endless opportunities for innovation and impact. Yet, despite significant progress, women remain underrepresented in tech careers. As a recruiter in the tech field, and as a mum to a young girl already showing an interest in STEM, this is a topic very close to my heart.
Here are a few of my top tips on how to empower girl's and young women to persue and can thrive in a technology career:
1. Explore Your Interests Early
Explore different areas of technology can help you discover what excites you. Try coding games like Scratch or Python, experiment with robotics kits, or participate in STEM clubs at school. The earlier girls start, the more confident they’ll feel. Toys such as Lego, building blocks, and science kits allows this interest to be nurtured and accessible for all.
2. Take Advantage of Online Learning
There are countless free and paid resources available to help you learn tech skills. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and Khan Academy offer courses in programming, data science, web development, and more. Websites like Girls Who Code and Code.org also provide fantastic resources tailored for young women interested in tech.
3. Find Mentors and Role Models
Having female role models in tech can inspire and show girls what’s possible. Look for mentors through organisations like Women Who Code or seek guidance from teachers, family members, or professionals in the field. A strong support system can help you navigate challenges and stay motivated.
4. Join Tech Communities
Being part of a supportive community can make a huge difference. Join coding clubs, hackathons, and networking events where you can connect with like-minded individuals. Online forums like Stack Overflow and GitHub are also great places to engage with the tech community.
5. Pursue STEM Education
If you're in school, take advantage of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses. Consider enrolling in computer science classes or attending STEM-focused camps. If you're in college, look into degrees in computer science, information technology, or related fields.
6. Develop Practical Experience
Real-world experience is crucial in tech careers. Work on personal projects, contribute to open-source software, or apply for internships. Many companies offer internship programs specifically designed for women in technology, such as Google’s Women Techmakers or Microsoft’s internship programs.
7. Apply for Scholarships and Grants
There are many scholarships available to help girls pursue tech careers. Many UIniversities have partnered with external organisations to offer women additional funding to access careers in
STEM – such as L’Oreal and Imperial College London, DeepMind and The University of Cambridge, and J.P.Morgan and The University of Bath. Further information around scholarships aimed at girls studying STEM subjects can be found at The Scholarship Hub, and The British Council.
8. Break the Stereotypes
The idea that tech is a “boys’ field” is outdated. Women have played key roles in shaping technology, from Ada Lovelace, the world’s first computer programmer, to modern-day leaders like Reshma Saujani and Sheryl Sandberg. Challenge the stereotypes and embrace your potential.
9. Stay Confident and Resilient
Entering a male-dominated field can sometimes be intimidating, but don’t let that discourage you. Believe in your abilities, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to take on challenges. Surround yourself with people who support your growth and keep pushing forward.
10. Advocate for More Women in Tech
As you grow in your tech career, be a role model for other girls who want to follow in your footsteps. Support diversity initiatives, mentor younger girls, and help create an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
